The Alamo – The Green Leaves Of Summer – Original Soundtrack

by admin on December 1, 2008

THE GREEN LEAVES OF SUMMER
Original Soundtrack composed by Dimitri Tiomkin, Lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. From John Waynes Epic Movie THE ALAMO. Also known as Number One Hit by the Brothers Four in the Early 1960..

lYRICS:
A time to be reapin’,
a time to be sowin’.
The green leaves of summer
are callin’ me home.
‘Twas so good to be young then,
in a season of plenty,
When the catfish were jumpin’
as high as the sky.

A time to be laughin’
a time to be livin’
A time to be courtin’
a girl of your own.
‘Twas so good to be young then,
to be close to the earth,
And to stand by your wife
at the moment of birth.

A time to be reapin’,
a time to be sowin’.
The green leaves of summer
are callin’ me home.
‘Twas so good to be young then,
with the sweet smell of apples,
And the owl in the pine tree
a -winkin’ his eye.

A time just for plantin’,
a time just for ploughin’.
A time just for livin’,
a place for to die.
‘Twas so good to be young then,
to be close to the earth,
Now the green leaves of summer
are callin’ me home.

Viet Nam WAS NOT …
Viet Nam WAS NOT the only War fought by the US ….its time to get over it ..

They fought like …
They fought like tigers to the death outnumbered 50 to 1, and none of them wanted to be trapped in the old mission.
It’s what they did with the last moments of their lives that make them immortal, not stupid, as George got to hide behind 20 tons of steel while making his sissy remarks. His blood was pink – if he disgraced the immortal courage of the fight at the Alamo.

Out of the 180 men …
Out of the 180 men who died at the Alamo, 40 of them were born in the British Isles.

The Alamo at the …
The Alamo at the time of the battle was nine acres. In fact, the problem was that it was TOO big to be properly defended. Ironic.

I too carried the …
I too carried the demons from The Nam with me untill I went back in 2000,where I left the demons, but the scars, both inside and out, will forever be there.I too reflected alot before going out on another recon mission, but I had faith in my God and just as much in my fellow L.R.R.P.S

As an Alamo …
As an Alamo descendent, and a former Viet Nam officer who did face constant combat, I can only say that I never put this song into my thoughts in Nam. Now after reading comments here, I do. Somehow they seemed braver than us, yet we were just as vulnerable to death, just had more resources to rescue us. It only takes one bullet to kill a person. The only thing I can share is something mentioned before, when the storm was on the horizon, we talked about life in general, not the pending fury.

I hope we’re not …
I hope we’re not too surprised to hear that you and your buddies spoke of ordinary things before going into battle. Even in war, life isn’t as melodramatic as the movies make it sound like. I saw a TV documentary at about the time you were there which told about the platoon who refused an order to take a certain trail because they felt they’d be ambushed. One of their favorite songs, they said, was “Reflections of My Life”, from the spring of 1970.

Yeah, I’m a Texan …
Yeah, I’m a Texan too! :) I’m like Bowie though, originally from Louisiana.

Nor do I Magistr. I …
Nor do I Magistr. I only pointed out that I was there to reply to Jordan about why this song was appropriate. And I agree about the new version. It was more accurate than the John Wayne version ( which I also loved even though I knew it contained little factual history ). I’m a Texan.

This movie is a …
This movie is a classic, but I also like the new version that came out a few years ago. One thing I liked about it was it showed the main characters as human beings rather than legends (actually I think the defenders must have been a little of both). Another thing is that it shows the seige taking place in the early morning before sunrise like it actually did.

I’m glad you …
I’m glad you survived though. My dad was a Marine over there, but to this day he still doesn’t like to talk about it too much.

You wanted to get …
You wanted to get your mind far away from what you knew was coming.

Rikki0 December 1, 2008 at 10:30 pm

I was in Viet Nam …
I was in Viet Nam in 70-71 JordanM. Obviously I was never in a doomed position, but was in many battles. The conversations by men about to go into battle ( not immediate battle, but pending ) would surprise most folks. Girlfriends, records, cars, the blacksheep uncle, mom and dad, sisters and brothers, favorite foods, etc. This song is quite appropriate. Was a good choice.

DavidMJordan December 1, 2008 at 10:30 pm

I used to wonder …
I used to wonder what the the words of this song had to do with a battle but i suppose nostalgia is all the more poignant when you’re about to die – or watch others die.

Siddharanj December 1, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Great song in an …
Great song in an equally great movie. The first time I watched this movie, it sent chills down my spine. Just watching a small group of doomed men quietly awaiting their fate while this song played in the background. And the song ‘Siege of the Alamo’ had a terrific sequence as well. Just one uva inspiring movie and music.

We all know who …
We all know who roadkiller is. I will be following up on YT to see why you have not yet been removed. Guess you don’t really have better things to do like you claimed on the Indiana Jones thread. You’re pathetic!

seattlehawks94 December 1, 2008 at 10:30 pm

John Wayne picked …
John Wayne picked this song for the movie. The Duke knew how to bring a real man like himself to choke up.

magistr88 December 1, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Why don’t you go …
Why don’t you go back to the other thread and read the rather complimentary greeting I left for you? Hey is roadkill what you had for dinner? Possum stew again or was it skunk?

Just a hunch? lol
